Maria is Shadow's only friend who died in the ARK 50 years ago... she's Professor Gerald's grandaughter and Dr. Ivo Robotnick (Dr. Eggman) niece :)

It's a joke type thing. The exclamation point is right next to the number one, so sometimes people that are new to the internet(commonly known as n00bs) and/or people typing to quickly often mess up and put 1's instead of !'s. Most people use that as a joke to satire n00bs or to make a character seems just plain stupid or really out of it.
